Marketing is vital for any business wanting to grow. I sometimes find business owners aren’t sure what marketing is or how it will help their business. What is marketing? Business owners are often confused about how to define marketing, thinking marketing is simply advertising. This is partly true, but advertising is only one of many marketing tactics.I’d like to explain what marketing is and how it can help you to build a strong, profitable business.

 

The Wikipedia definition is:

Marketing is the process of communicating the value of a product or service to customers, for the purpose of selling the product or service. It is a critical business function for attracting customers.

 

In reality Marketing is the bridge between customers and your business. Basically, marketing helps you to find and communicate with customers. The good news is it’s fairly simple, most people can do it you just need to get the basics right.

 

Let’s find more customers!

Marketing will help you to define who your customers are, that is, who is most likely to buy your product or service. Once you define who your customers are, then you need to understand where you will find them, as that’s where your marketing efforts need to focus.

 

Once you understand who your customers are and where to find them, the next area to look at is how. That means how are we going to convince potential buyers to purchase from us, that’s where marketing tactics come in. There are many different tactics available to you as a marketer, they include:

 

Print & Online Advertising

Email Marketing

Direct Marketing

Exhibitions

Public Relations

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Content Marketing

Word of Mouth

Telemarketing

Referrals

Events

 

There are many different marketing tactics, the list above covers only a few, and it’s impossible to do them all well. So another important element of marketing is strategy. Having a good marketing strategy will ensure you can maximise your marketing spend and efforts.

 

Strategy works hand in hand with marketing planning. I am a huge believer that all SMEs should have a marketing plan. It doesn’t need to be a huge document, it can be just a one page summary that outlines your plan and strategy for the coming year.
